Unless you just woke up from a 3 day nap, you know that Donald Trump is our next president. No, I did not stutter. How it happened I am not 100% sure, but it happened. And now we must pull our pants up, strap ourselves in and embrace the next four years.
Embrace? I know what you are thinking: who the fuck am I to tell you to embrace? Well, do you have a better idea because I would love to hear it?
I understand why so many of you are in fear for tomorrow; in fear for your future; in fear for your life. Donald Trump did a great job at spreading so much hate throughout his campaign. So much hate, that you couldn’t even fathom that others would align their thinking with his. I am here to tell you, all of your thoughts and fears are justified.
However, you know what isn’t justified? Continuing to spread hate because other people’s thoughts and opinions don’t coincide with yours. Michelle Obama said it best: “When they go low, we go high.” She is a wise woman. More than ever we all need to come together and rise above.
We need to rise above by spreading love because there is already so much hate in the world. We need to be the ones to set a good example. If not us, then who? Difference in opinion is what keeps life interesting. It’s how we continue to learn from one another.
It’s okay to be confused, or sad, or angry, or scared or terrified, but it’s never okay to inflict any kind of pain onto others because of what you are feeling. Channel that energy into a greater tomorrow. America, I beg of you to channel that energy into compassion, attempting to understand and staying informed.
And guess what? The next four years are going to be okay. They might be filled with scary bumps and unforeseen twists and turns, but they will be okay. You know why? Because I have hope. I have hope because America is already great. And America, it’s our duty to stay and continue to be great.
Remember: Trump is our present, but he certainly does not dictate our future.
“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.” –Mahatma Gandhi
A concerned, but hopeful American
**I’ll be back next week with some more current events. Now go pour yourself a couple glasses of wine, take a bath and relax/unwind.
